He and his wife, Dentist Dr. Julie Dao, have two of their own – a boy and a girl – who have a genetic problem: a cross bite. That’s where the lower teeth actually cover the upper teeth. Sure, it may be cute when they’re kids, but when they hit 17 and can’t eat properly, it’s a huge problem.

The reason Dr. Vo was trained in early prevention and early treatment is because he wanted to be an expert for his kids. He’s treating them for the cross bite right now and they both wear appliances at night. It’s become a habit for the two children and they actually enjoy it. It’s like they can’t go to bed without it.

It’s become part of who the children are. They remind their mother and father that they can’t put the appliance on if their teeth aren’t brushed. Dr. Vo thinks early treatment is the best thing you can do for your kids. He believes that if you care enough, and you’re alert enough, that’s the biggest favor you can do for them.

Starting your baby off with a visit to the dentist – at, say, two months old – is the best thing you can do for him/her. Obviously there isn’t a lot to examine at two months – it’s mainly a visit for the parents so they can learn what to expect when those first teeth start coming in.

But when the first baby teeth start to peek through the gums, then it’s really time for a dental appointment. The dentist can make sure the teeth are coming in properly and that there is proper space between them. If there’s not enough space, then the child might have problems when the adult teeth start to come in.

At six months, the dentist can even do a gentle cleaning on the baby teeth. It’s crucial that these first teeth are kept healthy and clean, because if they’re messed up, the permanent teeth can be damaged.

There’s something called “bottle mouth” that can destroy their baby teeth. Bottle mouth is caused by sending a child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. The sugars from the milk or juice interact with the bacteria in the mouth and form acid. That acid eats away at the baby’s teeth all night. If you must give your child a bottle at night, make sure it’s filled with water only.

By taking your child in for a visit when the baby teeth first arrive, you’re assuring that the first visit will be a pleasant one. Many parents wait until 7 or 8 years, when the permanent teeth start to come in. When you wait that long, there’s a good chance that first visit will involve filling a cavity at the very least. Then the child’s first experience with a dentist is a traumatic one. Take your baby to the dentist early and often to assure a healthy childhood.
